Do you love working with kids? Have you ever considered becoming an elementary teacher, nanny or pediatric nurse? These are all admirable professions, but they aren’t right for everyone.
If you’ve ever thought about one of these careers, we encourage you to consider a career in cosmetology.
If you love kids, want a career that’s creative and don’t want to attend a four-year college, cosmetology might be the right fit for you. Read below to see how you can specialize as a children’s hairstylist with a cosmetology license.
Children’s Hairstylist
What Does a Specialist Do?
Cosmetology is a vast field. There are so many jobs to pursue. The most common career path a cosmetologist takes is specialization. Someone who specializes as a children’s hairstylist focuses their skill set on cutting hair of people who are typically 12 and under. These specialists can work in kid salons doing haircuts or even hairstyles for special occasions. They may even visit children in hospitals to provide hairstyling services to help children celebrate their beauty.
Common Responsibilities and Skills
A children’s stylist is like someone who specializes in cuts for adults, just with a few added challenges. Here are a few common skills necessary:
- Haircuts
- Sanitation
- Organization
- Timekeeping
- Communication
- Empathy
- Patience
In addition to the skills listed above, someone who works with kids will also have to be familiar with helping children feel safe and happy. They will have to be tolerant of tears and wiggles. You will also have to be willing to work with parents. Usually children don’t pick their own haircuts, so you need to be ready to listen to the wants and ideas of the parents who are in charge of them.
What is Required to Specialize in Children’s Cuts?
A License
In almost all states it is required to hold a license to cut hair and be paid for it. This is also applicable for cutting children’s hair, so a license is a must!
Patience and Tolerance
While it is not usually required, we highly recommend that you have an interest in working with children. Moms and grandmothers are great candidates for these positions! If you tend to get annoyed or frustrated by children, we’d suggest you avoid this career!
