Douglas J Aveda Institute students, they’re always up to something good! You can catch them doing fundraisers, putting on fashion shows for charity or participating in other do-good events. There’s no stopping students who are on a mission to make a difference. On May 23, 2018, Douglas J Aveda Institute students at the East Lansing campus had a chance to impact and influence the lives of a very special group of people: veterans. Learn more about what they did to boost the confidence and bring a smile to these heroes. ⬇️

Who Participated?

The Stand Down for Homeless Veterans event is put on by the Volunteers of America (VoA) every year. They put on this event throughout the country on several occasions throughout the year.

Almost 30 students from the Douglas J Aveda Institute East Lansing campus joined the VoA organizers. These students were exemplary in their attitudes and willingness to help others around them. We want to thank those who participated for their positive attitudes and willingness to be shining examples of what all Douglas J Aveda Institute students should strive to be.

Where Was It Held?

Students and veterans gathered at Adado Riverfront Park for this event. This spacious park provided the perfect backdrop for this event.

Who Benefitted?

This event was put on for veterans who are currently homeless. Our students provided free haircuts to keep these vets feeling confident and clean. There were many veterans in attendance, and we performed 130 haircuts in the three hour time frame! We were so thrilled with the outcome!

Not only do we think that our local veterans benefitted from this event, but we believe our students learned and gained something, too. Every chance our students have to give back and make a difference, the better they become not only as aspiring beauty professionals but as people.

Meg Oswill, our Guest Services Coach in East Lansing said, “We all say that this event is extremely eye opening and that it is incredible to be given the opportunity to give something as small as a haircut back to someone that has done so much for our country. It’s incredible for the students and staff to learn that the best gift we can give is our time and heart. To be able to share a skill that they have in order to completely turn someone’s day around when nothing else is looking up for them is indescribable.“

Why Do We Give Back?

Douglas J Aveda Institutes give back because we care. We care for each other, our communities and the world as a whole. We strive to make a difference wherever and whenever we can. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a smile light the face of someone who deserves the world.

It is a part of the Aveda brand mission to do what’s right and make the world a better place, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than taking our passion for beauty and putting it to great use!

How Can You Get Involved?

Our current students will be given an open opportunity to sign up for charity and volunteer events as they are announced in school assemblies. Listen for your chance to sign up for the next offer!
