Summer is here and if you’re like us you’re going to be soaking up every bit of it. Unfortunately, so will your hair. While you’re having fun in the sun, you need to make sure you’re taking care of your hair. Especially if it’s colored. Summertime can be the hardest time to maintain your hair color due to constant sun exposure. Luckily, we’ve got some tips on maintaining your gorgeous color during these hot months!

Soak Before You Soak ?

If you’re looking for an easy way to dry out your locks and ruin your hair color, it’s chlorine. While you’re hanging out by the pool this summer, you’ll want to keep your hair from going green or brassy from the chemicals. An easy way to prevent this is by full wetting your hair in the shower before you dive in. Your hair will absorb the clean water like a sponge, making it more difficult for the chlorine to grab hold to your locks. Easy peasy!

Use The Right Stuff?

Using the right products can strengthen your strands while keeping your hair color as vibrant as the day you left the chair. When you have color-treated hair, you can no longer rely on your grocery store shampoo and conditioner. Aveda’s Color Conserve™ Set is our favorite pair to keep your color intact and leave your hair smelling incredible.

Extra tip: Make sure to space out the days that you wash your hair. Every time you wash your hair you risk stripping away the natural oils and your hair color.

After a full day basking in the sun, your hair is sure to feel a little brittle. Give it some life by soaking a mask through it! Aveda has a great Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque. This mask is a heavy duty defense and recovery system for your hair. Take some time to relax and recover!

Cool Down?

After a long day running around, a hot shower is usually a good way to unwind. However, hot water can open the hair cuticles and cause your hair color to wash down the drain with the water. Use the warm water to relax your muscles, but when it’s time to rinse turn that faucet toward cool. The cold water will protect your hair color and feel great after a long, hot day.

Put Down The Weapon?

Hot styling tools are great for creating fresh, trendy styles. Sadly, they’re not so great when it comes to preventing damage. High temperatures can fade your hair color and create brittle, dry texture. It can also lead to problems like breakage and split ends. Opt for your natural hair texture this summer. Whether you’ve got curly locks or silk straight strands, just let your hair do its thing!

Sunscreen For Your Hair!⛱️

Your hair needs sunscreen just as much as your skin does. No, we don’t mean pouring your sunblock lotion on your hair. That won’t do the trick. Aveda has a great lightweight, water-resistant UV defense spray! The Sun Care Protective Hair Veil will help build a shield between the damaging sun rays and your lovely locks. Quickly spray the mist over your hair before you head outside to play in the sun.
