The Knoxville Difference

Our People

Our Cosmetology, Esthiology and Barbering educators have extensive teaching experience in the industry. They have managed and owned their own salons, developed textured hair curriculum that is used across all campuses and boast several certifications including Aveda Color Specialist, Aveda make-up and Aveda Hair cutting.

In our Barbering program, you’ll receive hands-on training from licensed barbers who understand the ins and outs of this specialized craft. Douglas J is accredited through the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS), which ensures that we provide to our students excellent barbering education in terms of technical skill, creativity, and salon business education.

In short, our educators know what it takes to get licensed and start a successful business.

Our Place

  • Restored historic building with a beautiful vintage interior area with 65 styling stations and a dedicated barber clinic
  • Conference rooms and offices overlook first-floor clinic
  • Original spiral staircase that connects the retail area to the second-floor offices – all enclosed with glass walls to create an open and flowing environment

Opened in 2011, we’ve taken up shop right in the heart of Market Square in a beautiful, historic diner. We’ve preserved the original architecture starting with the recycled green glass. The ceilings, staircase, flooring and restaurant bar are all preserved as well with our Institute and luxury upscale spa. Located in the center of Knoxville, we’re surrounded by restaurants and shops, just steps from Market Square, which holds weekly events and concerts. Why did you choose Douglas J for your education? When I toured it was so friendly, welcoming and inviting. I really liked the people but even more, the whole experience. When I became a student, I worked with a lot of regular clients who shared many heartfelt conversations. The environment at Douglas J is so earthy and relaxed it brings that same feeling to the guests, unlike other places that tend to be busy and chaotic. I also really loved my teacher — she taught me so much and now I feel more prepared as a graduate!

- Taylor Maples, Douglas J Aveda Institute Esthiology Student

She is one of 100 cosmetology students throughout the country invited to participate in the Professional Beauty Association’s July 2016 Beauty Week conference in Las Vegas. Jyle has been able to develop a strong personal brand by creating a portfolio of images that demonstrate her ability as a stylist and ambitions to succeed in the field.

“I put a lot into what I do. I don’t want to feel like it is just school because to me it’s more than that.”

- Jyle Toplica, Douglas J Aveda Institute Knoxville Student

A Change of Heart (and Career): Despite plans to join the ROTC and become a helicopter pilot, when she was a senior in high school, Rachel participated in a work-based learning program that placed her as a job shadow at an Aveda salon. While there, she gained exposure to the Aveda experience and drew her interest toward cosmetology. She began to look into schools and when she toured the Douglas J Aveda Institute in Knoxville, she felt welcomed by the staff and fell in love with the program (not to mention the architecture of our historic building).

- Rachel Miller, Douglas J Aveda Institute Knoxville Student

What aspect of your training made the biggest impact? Cross training with the esthiology department. In the future I’d like to go back to pursue a dual certification which would, ultimately, make me more marketable. I also received tremendous support and encouragement at Douglas J from everybody educators to administration. Earning my cosmetology degree is something I’ve wanted since I was a child. Thankfully, I’ve got a very supportive husband whose pushed me to pursue my dreams and Douglas J helped me get there.

- Stacy Phillips, Douglas J Aveda Institute Graduate

Choosing to train with Douglas J is not just attending cosmetology school, it's the first step in building a career.
