Male Makeup Artists

Nov 19 2018

Men in beauty. It’s happening and we love it! Seeing male makeup artists breaking boundaries and pursuing their passions is inspiring. The rise of male makeup artists is spreading the message to men everywhere who are bending gender stereotypes to follow their passion for beauty. Male makeup artists have become more mainstream in recent years with male spokesmodels being featured on magazine covers, men building makeup empires and male MUA’s joining forces with celebrities.

The History of Male MUA’s

Male makeup artists have been around for some time. Back in the 80s and 90s, Kevyn Aucoin was making waves in the beauty world. He was creating trends that graced the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar and more. Kevyn was the brain behind the (now dated but ever popular) skinny brow trend. He was a stylist to celebrities including Naomi Campbell, Cher and Kate Moss. He was so popular that Naomi Campbell even recalled waiting in line to have him do her makeup.

Kevyn had big ideas and wasn’t afraid to share them. Despite his popularity, he faced an uphill battle on his way to the top. Male makeup artists were not always as widely accepted as they are today and that newfound acceptance is largely due to the recent popularity of social media.

The Rise of Social Media

The rise of social media is what has recently brought male makeup artists into mainstream beauty. It’s on platforms like YouTube and Instagram that today’s male makeup artists are able to find inspiration, confidence and support. Every day there are male makeup artists showcasing their talents on social media. This trend is fairly recent. It was 2016 when male makeup artists really started to gain recognition on social media.

Two years ago when CoverGirl announced their first male spokesmodel, James Charles, is when male makeup artists really started to gain recognition online. Conversations were sparked and eyes were opened to the world of male makeup artistry.

Today there are artists like Patrick Starrr, Manny Gutierrez and Mario Dedivanovic who boast millions of social media followers and work closely with celebrities. In fact, many celebrities love using male makeup artists. We are seeing celebrities like Beyonce, Kim Kardashian West and even Meghan Markle using male makeup artists for daily looks and special events.

Male MUA’s Making Waves

One of the greatest things about the beauty world is that there are countless opportunities available. This is true for men as well! As we’ve seen, male makeup artists have many different career paths they can follow. Some find their knack styling celebrities or creating their own product lines while others become beauty influencers. Even still, there are male makeup artists that work as beauty consultants and brand ambassadors. There are opportunities everywhere. Makeup artistry is continuously gaining recognition as a profitable, worthwhile beauty profession. We can’t wait to see where male makeup artists continue to shine and grow!

Pursue Your Passion for Beauty

We have learned two things from these inspirational male makeup artists. That is to follow your passion at all costs and that social media is the future of the beauty industry. We hope to share these lessons with you!

Don’t be afraid to follow your passion for beauty. If you’re doing something you love, it’s worth it. Even if people in your life don’t support it or you worry it will be difficult to build a future. Remember, hard work pays off.

We know the future of beauty lies in the importance of technology and social media. That’s why we offer iPads in our student kits. Here at Douglas J Aveda Institute, we insist on raising the standard of beauty education.
