Cosmetology Curriculum

Cosmetology is taught in an educationally progressive environment, emulating a high-end salon setting. To start, you’ll be in our classroom, receiving instructional education with our Educators providing guidance all along the way. Once you’re ready, you’ll train on the student clinic floor, interacting with a diversity of guests. Because we want you to be successful, we give you all the support you need, every step of the way. Our Educators work side-by-side with you, offering guidance and training while you work and gain real hands-on experience.

Cosmetology program features:

  • 1,500 hour program
  • Preparation for state board exam
  • Full-time (11 months) and part-time (15 months) schedules available

Esthiology Curriculum

In this full or part-time program, you move through Intro and Senior Theory, studying high-touch, high-tech techniques to purify, balance and renew the skin — the foundation of aesthetic beauty. Through hands-on training, you’ll work on mannequins, live models and then graduate to the student clinic spa interacting closely with guests. You also learn extensive business-building skills and wellness therapies, providing the training you need for a successful career as a licensed esthetician.

Esthiology program features:

  • 750 hour program
  • Preparation for state board exam
  • Daytime (5 months) and Evening (7 months) schedules available

In trendy, downtown Royal Oak, the Douglas J Aveda Institute echoes the energy of the local businesses, restaurants and boutiques — both inside and out. With a beautiful two-story space that utilizes open spaces and glass walls, this location, opened in 2008, embodies the Douglas J values by creating a space where students can learn and grow, guided by an accomplished staff. What are you most proud of in your career? The opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people who saw things in me that I had yet to see and who helped cultivate those things in a loving way.

- Denitra Townsend, AFA Makeup Artist

How did you get from Douglas J to where you are today? By working long hours — night and weekends to build up a clientele and surrounding myself with talented mentors and team members. Learning happens everywhere within the salon and outside — never stop learning.

- Kelly Kim, Designer

The greatest strength was how busy the institute was, it prepared me for what a real salon was like. Also, the wonderful fully trained staff.

- Chelsea Bullard, Douglas J Aveda Institute Graduate

My days are crazy! Don’t get me wrong — I love what I do! I’m behind the chair 40 hours a week and also educating my staff, fixing the behind-the-scenes salon “stuff” and opening a second salon. It’s easy to put in a 60-hour work week plus take orders from my beautiful girls at home!

- Jared Rushow, Aveda Salon Owner and Douglas J Aveda Institute Graduate

Choosing to train with Douglas J is not just attending cosmetology school, it's the first step in building a career.

- VIRGINIA MEYER, FORMER VP OF EDUCATION, AVEDA CORPORATE CO-FOUNDERS OF REDCHOCOLATE:tm:
