Student Story: Kayla F.

Jun 27 2019

When it comes to planning your future, things can change quickly. Many beauty school students may begin school with one plan in mind and then change paths entirely. That was the case for this month’s student story feature, Kayla Freeman! She originally enrolled in the esthiology program at Douglas J Aveda Institute before realizing that cosmetology was the right choice for her.

Choosing Cosmetology

With a family legacy at Douglas J Aveda Institute, applying to beauty school was a natural choice for Kayla. “To be the best you have to learn from the best, which Aveda provides,” Kayla says. “I like the products we’re using on guests, as well as the techniques.” In the beginning, Kayla chose esthiology because of an interest in body waxing. However, after friends and professionals suggested she pursue cosmetology, she reconsidered her choice. “[I realized] I can market myself much differently, as well as learn a year’s worth of skills I’ll have for the rest of my life,” she says. “I wanted to challenge myself in something outside of my comfort zone.”

The Douglas J Aveda Institute Family

Since she joined us at our Royal Oak location in October 2018, Kayla has made lifelong friends with her cosmetology classmates. “We teach each other and help each other through the program,” she says. “I celebrated my 24th birthday here and all my friends decorated my station to make me feel special for the day.” This type of warm, family environment is what we strive for at each of our locations. We want our students to grow and succeed. A welcoming, inclusive environment is key to that success!

“Lean on your friends. They’re here to help and it’s a sisterhood,” she advises future students. “Find what you like by trying new things and shadowing. Don’t stay still. This business is always moving.”

Kayla’s Goals

Kayla plans to graduate from our cosmetology program in September 2019. Until then, she was to maintain perfect attendance and fill her books every day so she can keep learning. “[I want to] seek an Aveda salon to assist at after graduation,” she says. “[My] future goals are to always do hair, take the educator’s course, and perfect my color and cut. I love fashion colors and playing with hairstyles.” By taking a leap of faith and switching from esthiology to cosmetology, Kayla discovered how passionate she was about hair cutting and styling!
