A Natural Talent Blossoms at Douglas J
From experimenting with her grandmother’s show makeup at the age of nine to dreaming of owning her own performance company, Jaelyn Searcy-Hammack’s journey into the beauty industry has always been rooted in passion and creativity.
That passion was front and center during this year’s Natural Talent Scholarship Competition, hosted by Douglas J Institute in Knoxville. Open to high school seniors across East Tennessee, the competition celebrates students who have taken the initiative to develop their skills in beauty, hair, and makeup artistry. Jaelyn’s unique perspective, inspired by performance art and stage makeup, quickly caught the judges’ attention.
In her heartfelt essay, Jaelyn shared the deep connection she has with her grandmother—or “Nona”—who inspired her love for dramatic visual expression. “We have a connection too close to explain,” Jaelyn wrote.
“She and I have loved the spiral for as long as I can remember. It has such a beckoning to its center… I believe with my creative mind and time, I could show people some mind-turning creations.”
Selected as a finalist, Jaelyn joined the final round of competition at Douglas J, where she styled a model from head to toe. Her look featured a bold reinterpretation of classic gothic makeup—elevated with just enough sparkle and color to make it uniquely hers. Using professional-grade face paint, Jaelyn created a sculpted and stylized design that honored tradition while embracing innovation.

Her talent, artistic vision, and meaningful inspiration left a lasting impression. More than a competition, this experience marked the beginning of Jaelyn’s journey toward turning her dream into a reality—and we’re proud to support her as she continues to grow her skills at Douglas J.
Jaelyn, we’re inspired by your creativity and determination. We can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next.
