Hayley Smith, an East Lansing graduate of Douglas J, is now a successful freelance hairstylist in New York City. From editorial shoots and fashion weeks to styling top athletes and celebrities, her career is anything but ordinary.
Hayley’s journey began with a passion for color, but she pivoted into haircutting and education after starting at Douglas J’s Ann Arbor salon. Her love for teaching and inspiring others led her to work across multiple states, join the Aveda North American Artistic Team, and eventually land in NYC.
It was a chance encounter during Fashion Week that changed everything. While working with Aveda backstage, she connected with influencer Jessica Wang, who encouraged her to go full-time freelance. Within six months, Hayley moved to NYC and began working with some of the biggest names in the industry.
Today, Hayley styles for GQ, Nike, Cerave, Madison Reed, Real Housewives of New York, and rising WNBA star Paige Bueckers. Her editorial work includes features in Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, and assisting on the Met Gala.
“Douglas J is the Harvard of beauty schools,” says Hayley. “They don’t just teach hair—they teach you professionalism, business etiquette, and how to carry yourself with confidence.”
Her advice to future stylists? “Don’t be discouraged if you’re not the loudest voice in the room. Confidence grows with experience, and quiet leadership can still shine.”
