From receptionist to master stylist and salon manager, Kevin Pelham’s career in beauty has been anything but static. After launching his journey at Douglas J Institute in Ann Arbor, Kevin’s path led him through Michigan, Nashville, and now Los Angeles—where he leads and styles at Luxe Lab Salon in Santa Monica.
“When I moved to LA, I had to start over completely—no clients, no network. I worked as an assistant and completed a two-year training program in just one year. Since then, I’ve moved up two stylist levels and now manage the salon. It’s been a wild ride, but incredibly worth it.”
Kevin’s career has included assisting celebrity stylists, working behind the scenes at fashion shows, and even traveling the world with a client as her personal stylist. But what he’s most proud of is the growth that’s come from putting in the work and being surrounded by mentors who saw his potential.

“It was a sacrifice—but it paid off. The support from staff was amazing. They really wanted us to succeed, and the hands-on training with real clients helped me build confidence fast. I passed my state board on my first try thanks to how well-prepared I felt.”
Kevin credits Douglas J with giving him the technical tools, professional mindset, and confidence to thrive in high-end salon environments.
“The kits, the structure, the accountability—it all made sense once I started leading a team of my own. I wasn’t afraid to cut hair when I left school. I felt prepared.”
His Advice to Future Stylists
“Market yourself early. Don’t be afraid to try new things or switch salons if something doesn’t feel right. And most importantly, find a mentor. Someone who believes in you and wants to help you grow.”
Kevin reminds future students that the beauty industry will take you as far as you’re willing to go.
“It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. There’s no cap on what you can earn or how far you can grow in this industry.”
