Meet a Douglas J Alumna Who’s Shaping the Future of Beauty

Can you tell us about your current role in the beauty industry and what you love most about it?

I currently work as a Master 2 Generalist at the Douglas J Salon in Rochester Hills, and I also serve as a Salon Coach. In addition, I’m a Certified Educator for BOB/Colorspace. What I love most is the versatility—I get to balance my love for both education and working behind the chair. These roles allow me to stay inspired while inspiring others.

What has your career path looked like since graduating, and what are some of your proudest or most exciting accomplishments?

My journey has been full of learning and adventure! Right after graduating, I traveled to London to study with Vidal Sassoon, which was an unforgettable experience. When I came back, I spent time at an Aveda salon in the Metro Detroit area before returning to Douglas J in Ann Arbor as an Educator Assistant. That’s where I completed my Educator program and became licensed.

For about five years, I worked as a Cosmetology Educator, but I missed the client connection, so I returned to working behind the chair at the Douglas J Salon in Ann Arbor. There, I took on the role of Art Director, where I had the incredible opportunity to learn from Vivienne Mackinder and begin teaching advanced education to our salon team.

My next stop was the Douglas J Royal Oak Institute, where I served as Education Coach for eight years. I loved supporting fellow educators in Cosmetology and Esthiology, helping them grow and reach their potential. Most recently, I’ve returned to the salon and also earned certification as a BOB/Colorspace Educator, opening up exciting new opportunities to teach in a whole new way.

Have you received any special recognition, awards, or notable opportunities in your career?

Yes! One of the most rewarding honors has been the chance to work and learn from icons like Vivienne Mackinder and Lupe Voss—opportunities that have deeply shaped my approach to both artistry and education.

In just a few words, how would you describe your overall experience at Douglas J?

Inspiring. From day one as a student to now, every time I walk into the building, I feel surrounded by love, care, and gratitude. That feeling never goes away, and it’s a huge part of what makes Douglas J special.

How did Douglas J help prepare you for success in the beauty industry?

Douglas J gave me a strong foundation. As a student, I experienced what it’s like to work in a real salon environment. As an employee, I’ve always felt believed in and supported. Whether it was in education or working behind the chair, Douglas J has been behind me every step of the way.

Looking back, what do you wish you had known when first starting out in the industry?

I wish I had understood that not everyone is for you—and that’s okay! This industry is all about relationships, and it’s unrealistic to think you’ll connect with every single client. I also wish I knew that growth takes time. Mastery doesn’t happen overnight. Be kind to yourself. If you improve by just 1% every day, that adds up to 365% in a year!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with someone considering a career in beauty or attending Douglas J?

Yes—follow your passion, even when it’s hard. There will be challenging days and moments of doubt, but don’t give up. You’re entering an incredibly fulfilling career, and the possibilities are truly endless. Give yourself grace and know that the hard work will pay off in beautiful ways.
