Ann Arbor Institute Graduate | Master Stylist, California

From night student to Master Stylist in sunny Southern California, Kristen Smetek’s career path has been anything but ordinary. Her journey is a great reminder that with passion, persistence, and the right training, a Douglas J education can take you anywhere.
Can you tell us about your current role in the beauty industry and what you love most about it?
Currently, I’m working full time as a Master Stylist in an Aveda Lifestyle salon in La Quinta, California. My days are a mix of performing a full range of hair services for guests and training our team of Stylists’ Assistants. What I love most is working one-on-one with the Assistants—teaching them techniques as I go and helping them build the confidence they need to take on their own guests in the future.
What has your career path looked like since graduating, and what are some of your proudest accomplishments?
My career has been a true journey! Over the past 19 years, I’ve worked at five different salon locations, including the Douglas J Salon in Rochester, MI, where I focused my skills as a Colorist. While specializing in color was exciting, I missed the connection of taking a guest from start to finish as a full-service stylist.
Six years ago, I took a leap and moved across the country to Southern California. Starting fresh in a new state wasn’t easy, but I’m proud to say I built a full clientele and continued my career as an Aveda Stylist.
Have you received any special recognition in your career?
This feature is actually the first formal recognition I’ve received—and I’m thrilled about it!
In just a few words, how would you describe your overall experience at Douglas J?
I had an amazing time at Douglas J. I started as a night student at the Ann Arbor location in 2006 while working full time as a secretary for the University of Michigan during the day. From my first day on the salon floor, I knew this was the career for me.
How did Douglas J help prepare you for success in the beauty industry?
Training at the Ann Arbor Institute gave me invaluable hands-on experience—we were busy with highlights and haircuts every single day. That fast-paced environment gave me a real preview of salon life, and I loved it.
Learning the Aveda “guest-focused” service cycle added something special to my training that I still use daily. I’m still giving my guests “moments of wellness” 19 years later.
Looking back, what do you wish you had known when first starting out?
I wish I had gone through a salon assistant program like the one I teach now. Continuing your education and building confidence in your technique after school is so important.
In my early days, I had to “fake it till I made it,” which was tough. Luckily, I had supportive friends and family to practice on. My advice—stay humble, keep learning, and have fun with it.
Any advice for future beauty professionals considering Douglas J?
Wear good shoes, take care of your body, and don’t be afraid to explore different salons until you find your perfect fit. Trust yourself and your journey—there’s no one “right” path in this industry.
It’s hard work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. You’ll meet people from every walk of life and have the opportunity to make a huge impact on them. Just remember to fill your own cup before pouring into others.
