Back to school season is here. High school grads everywhere are shifting into post-secondary education. For some that means heading back to the standard classroom but many are looking for a less conventional school setting. If you’re planning on going to school for cosmetology, massage therapy or esthetics instead of a traditional college, your experience will be different than your friends’. College isn’t right for everyone, and beauty school might be the type of education you always craved in high school. Even though it might be right for you, it doesn’t mean that the shift from traditional school to beauty school is easy. Don’t worry! We’re here to help guide you in your journey to getting ready for beauty school. Get started with these three things.
What You’ll Need
Essentials
It’s true you’re not prepping for a traditional school experience, however, you’ll still want some essentials. Make sure to bring a notebook and writing utensils to your first day of class. You’ll want to write down the names of your instructors, your daily schedule or other important information. You’ll be getting a lot of information on your first day and the last thing you want to do is to forget something crucial to your education. Whenever you think you’ll remember something, write it down anyways! You will thank yourself later.
You’ll also want to make sure that you’ve got the right back to school clothing. Find clothing that is comfortable to move in and is within dress code. Non-slip shoes are key to staying safe while working on the salon floor. One of the first things you will learn is that you’re always moving, so make sure that your shoes are not only stylish but comfy as well. You’ll also want to ensure that you have fun accessories to make a statement with your uniform. You came to beauty school because you love that feeling of confidence you get when you take the time to look good. This is your chance to show off your unique style. We love seeing our students’ personalities shine through!
The Right Attitude
Beauty school is hard work. It involves aptitude, accountability and a good attitude. You must be willing to give it your all. At Douglas J Institute, we’ve employed a staff of talented people to help our students on this journey. We were once fresh-faced students, and we are students even now. That’s how much this industry requires you to innovate and change as a professional.
You might be doubting if you’re good enough to go to beauty school but we believe that any beauty-lover has the capacity to challenge themselves. Having a positive attitude is the first step. No matter if you’ve just graduated high school or it’s been awhile since you’ve been in school, anyone with the desire to learn about beauty is a great addition to our family. So put your doubts aside because we’d love to have you here!
Make Goals
We encourage all of our students to set goals. Even looking into and finding out how to enroll in post-secondary school is helping you accomplish your goals for the future! We want to see all of our students succeed, and creating a plan for that success is essential. Ask yourself:
- What do I want to learn?
- What am I good at?
- What is my end goal three months into the program?
- What is my end goal six months into the program?
- What is my goal for graduation?
- What is my goal after graduation?
If you’ve chosen a beauty school that can help you answer all these questions, you’re on the right track! Here at Douglas J Institute, you’ll have the support you need along your journey through beauty school and even after graduation. You’re not just a number to us and we want our students to know that we value each person that walks through our doors. Not only do we care about what you accomplish here but also what you’ll achieve when you enter the working world. That’s why we provide a variety of student resources and extend special offers to our alumni through our club card. Once a part of the Douglas J family, always a part of the family.
We also want to make sure that everyone is given the chance to fulfill their beauty school goals. We offer financial aid to those who qualify.
